Negrete McLeod Statement on the Expiration of Unemployment Insurance for Millions of Americans

Statement

Date: Dec. 27, 2013
Location: Montclair, CA

Congresswoman Gloria Negrete McLeod (CA-35) released the following statement on the expiration of emergency unemployment compensation for 1.3 million Americans on December 28th:

"Millions of American families will now face the New Year with uncertainty as a result of the refusal by Congress during the latest budget negotiations to extend critical unemployment insurance. I could not support this 2-year budget agreement as a result.

"At a time when the economy is steadily recovering and millions of unemployed Americans are struggling to find work, not extending this vital lifeline to millions of American families hurts our economy. Every dollar invested in this initiative yields $1.52 in economic growth, and an extension of UI could produce as many as 300,000 jobs.

"The first item on Congress' agenda in the New Year must be to extend unemployment insurance and advance an agenda focused on job creation, a stronger middle class, and responsible deficit reduction."
